mmn = mother's maiden name, as recorded on the birth indexes. I would guess that all of these children are born to Alice M. Holt, initially to her husband William French, and then to Joseph Ambrose.
I can't see a marriage for her to Joseph. The remarriage under both names "French" and "Holt" might suggest she was divorced at that point - normally a widow would just be using her last married name.
