Double marriage? 1941 and 1951
« on: Friday 15 September 17 22:05 BST (UK) »
Dear all,

Who could help me unravel this mystery?
During my research I came across what seems to be two marriages for the same people, with 10 years of difference. It concerns Bridget Geraghty and William J Banks, who married in Liverpool in 1941 and 1951. See:

Hope these links work? In the last one, you can see that the register mentions Banks or Williams or Geraghty as spouse's name.

Does anyone know what could be going on here? Did the couple marry twice? Or did Bridget Geraghty first marry another Banks (and a Williams)?

Curious to hear your thoughts!

J.

It looks as if they divorced and remarried, the 1951 marriage shows Bridget's name as Banks or  Geraghty.

If you buy a copy of the 1951 cert it should show their previous marital status but I agree it looks as though they may have divorced and remarried.  Alternatively - perhaps the 1941 marriage was declared void for some reason

Can't see any children born between 1941-1951 unless Bridget was previously married before 1941 and Geraghty was her married name.  Children born to the Banks marriage would show her maiden name - not previous married name

I wouldn't assume they divorced, although it's possible - but there are plenty of known examples of "double marriages" for no apparent reason. You need to get both certificates to see how they are described (bachelor/spinster, previous marriage dissolved etc.).

I have a similar case at the moment where a couple married (as widower/widow) in 1944 and then married again in 1955 (both now showing as divorced). The truth was they both lied on their first marriage and their partners were very much alive.

Once they  actually got divorced from their first partners they married again ( with one witness appearing on both marriages and also the same registrar). On the second marriage the bride is listed under the same surname as her husband ( with "formerly known as" for her previous name) which is correct because she had been living as his wife for 11 years and so that was the name she was known by at the time.

Thank you all so much for your replies! It's very interesting to hear of a similar situation. I guess I have to order both certificates indeed to try and find out what happened here (just a shame this whole family research is becoming quite an expensive project this way ;) )

There's talk of another pilot in October with cheaper certificates so it might be best to put them on hold for a bit.
