Thomas Knox of Kilbirnie
« on: Friday 22 September 17 06:06 BST (UK) »
A letter has been passed down through the family that says that the family came from Kilbirnie, Scotland.
I have Thomas Knox (1809-Death 13 Mar 1870, Tedd, Co Fermanagh) married to Catherine(1814-1869) (surname Unknown) Aug 1831, Fermanagh, Ireland.
Children-: Andrew Knox 1832-1885
               Catherine Knox 1836-1890
               Thomas Knox 1842-1908
Mary Jane Knox 1843-1911 (GG Grandmother)
               William Knox 1847-
               David Knox 1853-
               Robert Knox 1856-1928
I am trying to link the family to the "Kilbirnie Knoxs" but can't find any official link.
I would appreciate any help Thanks Sue

Hi SueKay11 and welcome to Rootschat.

Do you have any middle names for any of Thomas's children?
Do you have a occupation for Thomas?

How old is the letter you mention and who wrote it?

Sorry for the questions. Just rootling around for any more clues (if you have them )

Looby :)

Hi Looby,  The Letter was with a set of gold rim Glasses worn by Mary Jane Graham (nee Knox) explaining how the glasses were given to Mary Anora Dodds (nee Graham). Her daughter who was born at sea was named Anora after the ship that bought her parents to Australia.
I Have been looking for years for a ship called Anora. I ended up looking for the meaning of the name.
It is Irish for Honour. I finally have found her birth at Sea record on a Ship called the Legion of Honour on the 24/04/1864.
In 1862 Thomas Knox according to Mary Jane's Marriage Certificate was a Farmer at Tedd, Derryvullen, Fermanagh, Ireland

You are probably aware that the Knox's from Kilbirnie are a significant family. They owned W & J Knox who operated from Knox's Mill in Kilbirnie and sent nets and ropes worldwide.

Sir Bryce Knox was involved with the company after WW11 and subsequently became Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire.

Don't know if they are related to your family but you might be able to work forward or back from him to see if they link in along the way.
