Hi,

I am in Australia.   In my family "Peg" and "Peggy" and "Meg" are all the affectionate names for Margaret and/or Marguerite and/or Margot and/or .... wait for it ....  Dorothy.     Aunty Peg, whose formal name is Dorothy Irene says she has been "Peggy" all her life, and finds it amusing when officialdom speaks to her addressing her as 'Dorothy' re benefits available to her due to her age.  She was born in 1921.   :)

I agree Peggy is short for Margaret.

Isn't Dolly is a short name for Dorothy. Was there any connection between Peggy and Dolly? Peg Doll?  Dolly-peg? (I bought some wooden, British ones today.) Laundry was washed in a dolly-tub and hung out with dolly-pegs.  Dolly and Peg went together.

Maiden Stone,  yes, yes, yes,  that makes excellent sense.  Dolly-pegs,  I well remember them.  I am sure you have sorted that for me.
