Ned Conroy of Melbourne: who is he?
« on: Friday 29 September 17 14:39 BST (UK) »
I have two very faded postcards which have been handed down through our family, and I would love to establish what the connection with us is. The postcards were written in April and October of 1916 and sent from the Front in France to (Mrs?) E. Conroy at 16 Earl Street, Windsor, Melbourne, Victoria. One card begins "Dear Mum and Dad," while the other has just "Dear Mum," and both are signed "your loving son Ned." Does anyone perhaps recognise him or the address? It's possible that he served with Frank Ernest Newton of The Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment, while in France.

Hi Jamjar,
what you have put is correct but that couple are Ned's Grandparents.
They originated from Galway.

Yes, I realise they are the parents of the father of Ned (Edward), as it is the father of Ned who died in 1923.

Thanks to both of you for the quick response to my query! I would dearly like to know how the postcards came into the possession of my family rather than his, but even if I never find that out, at least I can put a face and a history to the previously unknown Ned. (I was scanning the postcards to include in a family tree folder I'm in the process of putting together for my younger sister, but keep getting sidetracked by things like this....)

Yes, I too wondered how you came to have the postcards.

I also find myself wondering what Edward and his wife are doing in SA, when they died in VIC.
