Tatiara Meat Company, Bodertown, South Australia
« on: Sunday 01 October 17 00:48 BST (UK) »
Just by chance I ran across an article in a German periodical from Oct. 2005 about above company, celebrating its 25th anniversary that year. They were said to export the best Australian lamb worldwide.

As the company's founders, the HÜBL-Brothers Erich and Eckhard, were born in Porstendorf, Moravia - part of the area and surnames I'm researching - I was wondering whether this company is still existing and who is running it presently.

Any info would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any kind help,
Giselap

Hi JM,

thanks a lot for the attached links.

But sorry to say that Google is definitely NOT my friend, try to avoid it as much I can ...  8)

In this special case, however, I didn't even take Google into consideration as I must admit, I didn't even think of the Tatiara Meat Co. being actually anything THAT big and important. Thought it to be rather a small local company ... Well, we just don't eat that much lamb here in Northern Germany and if we do, the meat usually comes from NZ ;)

Anyway, thanks again for your help,
Giselap

Hi Cando,

thank you so much for the additional links and the correct name of the respective town.

As I feel that I owe you and JM a favour: I'm rather good at translations (German/English) and/or reading old German hand writings.
Thus, should you need any help in this respect, just pls let me know.

Thanks again for your kind help, I really appreciate it  :)

Hi Giselap,

My German ancestors were from Detershagen in Mechlenburg-Schwerin and I find it very difficult to translate the old German handwritten church records into English I might call on you to help me out with a few queries via PM if that is ok.

Regards
Gerry

Hi Gerry,

just give it a try and I'll see what I can do for you.

As a matter of fact I roughly know the region your German ancestors were from as we had friends not too far away from there in the 1980/90ies. Had to look up Detershagen on map though first via GOV (Genealogisches (Geschichtliches) Orts-Verrzeichnis / Genealogical (Historical) list of places) which also told me that the population is about 157 presently only. Rather small village, isn't it?

Rgds from Hamburg - just a tiny bit bigger than that ;)

Thanks Giselap,

You are correct it is a small village near Kropelin with the largest city nearby being Rostock about 30 km away.

The Baptism and Marriage records are in hand written German and while the names and places are fairly easily translated into English there are some words that are difficult to figure out.

The 1819 Census for Detershagen is only a few pages long, my direct ancestors migrated from Detershagen to South Australia in 1848.

I will get a few things together and PM you, probably will be in a couple of weeks or so.

Gerry

No need to hurry, just take your time, Gerry.

However, as almost all our family festivities start around US Thanksgiving and as we are rather an international bunch we have quite a lot to celebrate.  :D
Unfortunately I'm the one doing most of the decorating, cooking and cardwriting.  :-\

Thus it just might take me a couple of weeks as well or even more to get the 1819 Detershagen census translated.

Hope that's ok for you.
