Help please : Family Mystery William Groves missing link! born circa 1883
« on: Wednesday 04 October 17 20:05 BST (UK) »
Hello fellow members it is with a little bit of hope that I bring to you a problem that has been something I have personally tried to toil with on and off over the last few years my late gt grandfather was William Groves born circa 1883 and on my grandfathers passing he mentioned we weren't ment to be Groves' at all in fact William should have been William Ulrich.

In this vein I have attempted to source a beginning to all of the confusion from going to maybe he had a name change because it sounded foreign? to maybe he was adopted? until I happened upon a census saying he was down as William Ulrich With his father as George Ulrich.

By now you would think that this was the start of breaking down the mystery but I then found the date and marriage bann for William and he was down as William GROVES nightmare!!!! but this then came to even more confusing conclusions that on the bann it said father --------- and occupation --------- I was lead to believe that even a deceased father had a mention on these banns but for some reason nope not mine!

so any help advice from others would be greatly accepted with anticipation thank you for reading

Born Halifax/Rastrick by the looks of the census entries.

George Alfred Ulrich (bachelor) and Elizabeth Groves (spinster) married at St John the Baptist, Halifax on 3 July 1886, so after William's birth.

George Ulrich may therefore have been William's stepfather as opposed to natural father.

So unless George Ulrich was his natural father and he and Elizabeth took a long time to marry, William's correct name was Groves.

Possibly the William Grove born in Halifax in sept quarter 1883. GRO index does not show maiden name for mother, suggesting he was illegitimate.

Looks good.  Later records suggest his birthdate was 10 September 1883.
