The Britannia Rope & Twine Works Factory in Rochdale

The original Britannia Rope & Twine Works Factory was built in Rochdale in 1840.  Unfortunately, Touchstones in Rochdale have no information on where it was, or who owned it.

The Factory was famous for making the longest piece of rope in the country – 100 metres long.  Products included washing lines, skipping ropes and ropes for Boxing Rings.  It made the rope-pulls for the toilets used in Butlin’s Holiday Camps, and even hangman’s nooses.

Around 1840 there were seven Rope-Makers in Rochdale, including an Ancestor of mine, James Turner of St. Mary’s Gate and Dane Street.  I would be most grateful if anyone could shed any light on who owned “The Britannia Rope & Twine Works” and where the 1840 factory in Rochdale might have been built.

I think this might be the Ropeworks at Edenfield that succeeded the one TinaRoyal is interested in. Bottom left it says
The original factory was first built in Rochdale in 1840, then after a disastrous fire in the 1960s moved to Edenfield.

Yes JenB, it is the original Factory built in Rochdale I am interested in, before it moved to Edenfield.

Interesting.  I have neither a Riley, nor a Warburton listed as Rope Manufacturers in Rochdale in the 1840’s.

Could it be perhaps that in 1840 the Rochdale company’s name was not the “Britannia Rope & Twine Works” and only became called that, when it moved out of Rochdale and “merged” with a pre-existent company of that name in Edenfield ?

Thank you all for trying to find out where the original Britannia Rope & Twine Works Factory was built in Rochdale in 1840, and who owned it.

I was hoping that someone might have access to a Map which identified whereabouts it was, but alas not.
