Military Tag

I attach a photo of a tag I have. Assuming it is naval I have tried name and number on Ancestry and Findmypast, no luck. I am not sure what the significance of the PMx is. can anyone suggest any avenues of research please?

PMX = Portsmouth, prefix to Service number

Thanks for that although the first link keeps failing. This looks like a home made tag, is it? As this appears to be from someone who joined after 1930 where can I research the service number. I've never had much to do with more modern military records.

I have now ascertained that his forename is Matthew but I still can't trace him.

Yes but unfortunately as I am not a relative I need to provide proof of death to obtain the records.

Even relatives have to provide proof of death unless the subject died in service.
