The daughter Marie/Mary  never married and died in 1921.  Her death certificate does give her mother's name as Annie Phelan

I think Anna died in 1901. Several of the children are also buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.

The DOB for the entry for Anna was mis transcribed. If you look at the close up of the stone it has born 183, Not 1881.

Not sure where James is in the 1900 census, but Anna is listed as married (for 44/49 yrs) and her daughter Mary is also living with her.

Anna states she immigrated in 1858. That should give you a time frame to work with in a search for immigration record.

Thank you Sandra & RJ137 for all the information it will take me a while to study it.  Certainly seems to be the correct family.  I guess we can never discover why the surname change .
When the family immigrated where would they likely have landed before settling in Iowa? :) :)
Also leaves me with the question of surname on ship records

I wonder if the reason James wasn't listed in that 1900 census with Anna & daughter Mary was that they may have been divorced?

The 1895 census is interesting. Son Patrick was married in 1894 as already noted. In 1895 he and his wife are together as well as what appears to be his mother and sister Mary living with them . The marital status definitly looks like a "D" to me. I don't see James in the 1895 census.
