Here are the details of the second certificate:

Margaret Ann Charlotte Heywegen was born on 15th May 1942 at 22 Stuart Street, Cardiff. Her parents Jan Heywegen (Ship's donkeyman in Dutch merchant navy) and Anne James registered the birth on 7th February 1944 ("on the authority of the Registrar General") by when they were living 21 Coburn Street, Cardiff.

This is over two weeks after registering the birth of younger sister Irene and I assume was due to the need to get official permission to register Margaret's birth almost two years after her birth.

Stuart Street no longer exists as such. It was in Butetown (i.e. the docks) and fell victim to the rundown of Cardiff Docks and was bulldozed as part of the Cardiff Bay regeneration. There is an early photograph of Stuart Street (scroll down) at:

That would because of The Legitimacy Act 1926 ;D

The Act allowed children to be legitimised by the subsequent marriage of their parents, provided that neither parent had been married to a third party at the time of the birth. In those circumstances, the legitimised birth was re-entered in the birth indexes for that year (sometimes many years after the original birth). The original entry would be annotated to refer to the new entry.

Thanks KGarrad,

I believe they left for Holland after the end of the war and were married there. Margaret returned to UK later on and thence to Canada after marrying someone else (surname Cuperis or Kuperis).

It is Margaret's elder daughter with whom I am in touch and who was given up for adoption in Canada.

Go to Archiefkaarten 1939-1994 and search on Heijwegen

There is a Jan Heijwegen b. 16 February 1903, listed as dying 12 April 1948 it lists two wives to him:
Wilhelmina Smit, b. 1908, married 1930, marriage ended 12 Jan 1948, by divorce  (door S = door scheiden)
Hannah Livadaros (???), b. 2 August 1918 Mynddislwyn , married 18 Feb 1948, marriage sadly ended the same year, 28 Jul 1948, when she died (door O = door overlijden).

There are four children listed between him and Wilhelmina, between 1928 (before the marriage!) and 1940.  One stepdaughter b. 1938 Amsterdam with the surname Janssen (?) whose parentage is uncertain, and then the two daughter b. Cardiff - a marriage date and husband's name is given for the younger.

There is a card for "Hannah Livadaros" which also makes a reference to "Ann James" - it only lists her marriage to Jan and her two children with him who we already know about.

Her birth *is* listed as Livadaros and there is a marriage for her parents (under Liadaras or Liaderes).  Her father, Sivionas Liadaras, was born in Greece in 1892

I'm guessing either her mother remarried a Mr James and she took that name later, or the name was changed to sound more English.

jorose, this is fantastic. Many thanks.

the dates all make sense as does why Jan and ??Anne weren't married when they registered the births. Oh the life of a wandering sailor; a girl in every port or in the case of Cardiff, three girls!

Also the Greek thing also matches up to the background information provided by Ann/Hannah's daughter.

More anon!!
