Completed - Where did Edith spring from?
« on: Monday 23 October 17 13:41 BST (UK) »
Edith Alice Atherton married William Henry Dunbar at St. Michael's in Hulme on 29 March 1902. She gives her father as Thomas, a labourer, and her address as 28 Prescott St. Her age is 20. The witnesses are John Cooper and Eliza Pover, with no known family link.

In 1911, Edith claims to be 28 and born in Manchester.
The 1939 entry gives a date of birth of 26 August 1881.
Her death index in 1970 gives a date of birth "About 1882", so her birth registration was hiding even then.

It seems likely that she was in Hulme in 1901, but I can't reliably find her in either 1901 or 1891.

The best fit I can find is an Edith Atherton born in Crewe in 1877. Her father was Thomas, and was a labourer. The family are in Beswick in 1891 and Ardwick in 1901, when Edith has become "Ada". However, she has no middle name, and she was registered in Apr-Jun, so isn't a good match for the birthday from 1939.

Can anyone find a better candidate?

Sadly, I think Miss Pover is found in the 1891-1911 Census, born Openshaw, father Samuel.

Looking very likely!

There's a marriage of Thomas Bond Atherton and Mary Brown at the Collegiate in 1871. Both are from Hulme.

Well done Ambly!

Thanks to your insight all lines up, except for Edith/Esther's birth registration. She seems to avoided the registry office.
