Blaenllechau Road vs. Club Row, Ferndale/Blaenllechau
« on: Tuesday 24 October 17 15:56 BST (UK) »
Hello--
I have a family at 14 Blaenllechau Road, Blaenllechau in 1891. The husband
had died in 1888 at 14 Club Row, Ferndale (listed on death certificate).
The wife died in 1893 at 14 Club Row at Blaenllechau. I looked at a few maps
from around that time. They appear to be all the same place.
Can anyone clarify?? Thanks.

Club row is shown here, a continuation downwards of Long Row,  it is the name given to the row of houses,  when the road was extended and more houses built it was then named Blaenllechau road.

Blaenllechau is part of ferndale, as far as I can tell

Hi There,

There is a facebook  site called Sunny Blaenllechau. I know Claude who runs this site.
He had many photos of the area and helped me recently to find photo of the area and the family whose tree I was researching.  He runs a history group in the local Ferndale library in the Rhondda on a Thursday morning.
Do use his facebook and i am sure he will help with any querys
Blaenllechau is another village  not part of Ferndale  they lie next to each other
If i can help in anyway please ask
Kind regards

I can assure you that Blaenllechau Road was the original name and it became Club Row - why I never found out. As I delivered papers around Blaenllechau, it was always called Club Row. However, from the late 1860's when the people poured into Blaenllechau to work in the mines, a great number came from parts of England, so their ability to pronounce Blaenllechau could have been a factor in the change of name. The street in front of Club Row was Commercial Street where a Workingman's Club called the Radical Club was opened, when I don't know. Trust that helps you.

Hello--
Thank you so much. Yes, it would be hard to pronounce.
I am from USA--I do not know how to pronounce Blaenllechau.
I appreciate your help.
