Seeking Andrew RAINEY/RENNIE, wife Agnes TAYLOR & sons
« on: Wednesday 25 October 17 03:51 BST (UK) »
I am looking any information (or suggestions) regarding the ANDREW RAINEY/RENNIE family in Antrim - possibly the Portrush or Ballymoney area.  Andrew was a shoemaker and probably born about 1784. He wed AGNES TAYLOR. They were both deceased by 1858.

The children I know of were:

JAMES RENNIE b. 1804 - 1808.  Wed MARY McINTYRE/CUMMINGS.  They had George b.1835 and Mary b.1837

ANDREW RENNIE b. 1822. Wed (in Scotland) MARY JANE FORD b.Ireland

JOHN RENNIE b.1824. Wed (in Scotland) ESTHER MITCHELL b. Ireland

All three sons were residing in Renfrewshire, Scotland by 1839-1841 and I have been able to trace.
All their death records confirm their parentage.
Since there is such a time gap between the birth of James and Andrew Jr. there are most likely more siblings out there as well.

Any suggestions/ideas for the births, deaths, siblings, and residence of this family would be most appreciated.

I looked in the Rev Park’s census of Ballymoney parish in 1817. There were only 5 Rainey (Rennie in Scotland) households in the parish. None headed by an Andrew Rainey. John Rainey in Eden townland had a son Andrew but obviously that’s not your man.

There was a widow Rainey (forename unknown) in Ballywindeland Upper who had a son James but obviously if your family were still producing children in the 1820s that can’t be the right one either.

You may struggle to find any trace of this family. Few Presbyterian churches in that area have records for the late 1700s/early 1800s, and folk with occupations like a shoemaker tended to otherwise live their lives below officialdom’s radar.

Death registration didn't start in Ireland till 1864 so the parents both died before that. Probably no record of their deaths or burials.

I also checked the 1803 agricultural census for north Antrim. No Andrew Rainey listed there either.

The surname is pretty common across Co. Antrim so perhaps they came from further south in the county.

Elwin -   Thank you for your efforts on my behalf.

I have been circling this family for years with no luck, and it seems I'm not likely to get any.  I just hoped that since Andrew is not the most common of names in Ireland that someone, somewhere might have a contender in their records.

Methinks I shall head south as you have suggested ....

Thanks again,  Jan
