Henry Latta Possibly from Italy ?

I have Henry Latta born about 1828, he was a mariner (Merchant Service). Henry married Flora McDougall 23 Mar 1858 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, they had 2 son's. On 28 Nov 1870  Royal Infirmary, Glasgow Henry died from complications arising from a leg accident on board a ship. On 23 Sep 1872 Fever Hospital, Glasgow Flora died, the 2 young lads were taken in by Flora's uncle until 1881 when the youngest Walter was placed in the City Orphan Home, James Morrison Street, Glasgow. Later that year he was 'shipped' off to Canada as a Home Child. I sent off to Quarriers for any records for Walter, when they arrived it stated the Henry (1828) was an Italian seaman. According to Henry's marriage cert his father was Francis Latta (Merchant Service) and mother Julia Rose. Can some kind person please advise me as where I might find Henry's birth ? (I cannot read or speak Italian)

Hi Janetm,

Your LATTA (and LATTO, which is one of my Scottish/Fife family names) I would have said was very likely either Scottish or Irish.

With a father named Francis, perhaps Ireland?  When I first come across my Gt- Grandmother LATTO, I though the same - but her line went back to at least the early-mid 1700's - and other LATO lines in the 1600's.  "Julia Rose", sounds very Irish to me, also.

There are many lines of though as to the names' origins - Italian, Eastern European, Jewish. My GtGM, was quite dark and swarthy looking in my opinion ( B&W photos).

I would question the surety of the source saying he was 'Italian Seaman"?

On Henry's marriage cert, and his death - what is the format used to describe his mother :
does it say:   

"Julia LATTA maiden surname (ms) ROSE"?

or just "Julia ROSE"

It says Julia Lotto (Another variation lol) maiden name Rose, Deceased

This was from the original Quarrier's records for Henry's son Walter
