OSKAR PAJUNEN in FINLAND - Somero 1913, Lyly 1923/24 & Tampere 1930
« on: Monday 30 October 17 20:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I know some of you Rootschatters read Finnish and can easily locate and translate census records etc. that are available from online Finland resources.  Thus I am so hoping that one of you could please lend me a hand here :)

I have 3 brothers that came to Canada over a 6 year period in the 1920s but what I'd like to find is information on their father & and who exactly their mother was.  Seems the family may have moved around in the south and southwest of Finland perhaps for the father's job.

Oskar Feliks Pajunen came to Canada in 1923 - he later went to the USA
He said he was born in Humpila, Hameen laani, Finland June 29 1896 (although 1897 has been used too).
On another document he said Tammela was where he was born.  He had a wife and children in Finland that I believe he later brought to the USA.
At the time of his immigration in 1923 he says his father Oskeri was living in Lyly, Finland

Einar Edvin Pajunen came to Canada 1924.  He went west to farm
He was born 1898-1900 (different documents give different ages)
At the time of his immigration he says his father Oskar was also in Lyly, Finland

Allen(Ahto) Pajunen came in 1930 to meet brother Einar out west.
He says he was born 30 Oct 1913 in Somero, Lansi-Suomen Laani, Finland
At the time of his immigration he indicated that his father Oskar's address was Tampere, Vuohenoja 53, Finland.

Anybody able to find their father Oskar Pajunen at some point from 1896-1930 in south/southwest Finland with some or all of his boys or at the address in Tampere in 1930?

I'd really appreciate the hand up in locating their family in Finland and working backwards.

Hi LUV

I took a look in some of the Finnish records and found a couple of things. I think you need to be a member to look at the later years but there is a chance you may find nothing, it is a chance you may have to take. I have been a member but not for the time being. Here is the page:

http://www.sukuhistoria.fi/sshy/index_eng.htm
If you click on "Join" you can see what is needed.

Here is what I found. You will need the later years (if available) to be sure if this is the right family.

Oskari Pajunen and wife Jenny Matilda with birth of daughter Jenny Ragnhild: http://hiski.genealogia.fi/hiski?en+t9750222

Oskari Pajunen's birth: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01kz9/

Oskari's Census from 1871: http://www.rootschat.com/links/01kza/

These records are in Swedish.
If this is the right family then going backwards is possible.

Thank you so much Ian
I have been flipping between these records and google translate ;)
I am now pretty certain that the parents of Jenny Ragnhild are indeed the couple I seek.   I believe strongly that they are also the parents of the 3 brothers who came to Canada.  :)

However based on what I will explain next, I do not think the Oskar you found in 1863 is the father though.

As using Jenny's birth, or rather her name, I was able to get into a tree at MyHeritage and another at Geni.
The MyHeritage tree is in Finnish (I used translate and of course I think a few things were lost in translation) but while I am not a member, it showed Jenny with my three guys and more! Seems that the three brothers that came to Canada were members of a much larger family - there were 8 siblings :D

In fact there are a few trees at MyHeritage for this family all Finnish and none that I can access fully but it seems piecing them together from what I saw my 3 guys father's full name was:
Heikki Oskari Mattila, Pajunen.
Heikki was born on May 15 1869, in Humppila.
His father was Kaarlo Töykkälä, Mattila

The boys mother was:
Jenny Maria Kustaant. Mattila, Pajunen (born Kylänpää)
Jenny was born  23. December 1869 in   Kuusjoki
Her father was Gustaf Adolf Keskitalo

So now I do have a question for you Ian and it has to do with their last names or surnames or whatever...
They seem a a bit odd?
Why the "Mattila" before the Pajunen?  And the Kustaant Mattila in the case of Jenny?

And then their fathers have different surnames too???

Can you perhaps enlighten me as to how surnames worked in Finland back then?

Thanks so much Ian for the hand here
I am going to send you a PM as I have tried to use HisKi for another individual I am seeking but am not having any luck.

Cheers.
The surnames can vary quite a bit depending on where they lived. Many Finns took the name of the farm they lived at, sometimes keeping the original name or changing as they moved.

Hmm   Ragnhild is without doubt a Viking surname synonomous with the occupation of The Orkney Isles and Isle of Man and East coast of Britain ...and I would think Swedish and not Finish ...back soon ....
thought so -
Countess Hilder Ragnhild died aged 44 on the Island of Orkney in 892 and was born 848 - she married King Rollo The Dane  -so maybe Danish and not Swedish ??

https://gw.geneanet.org/alagergren?lang=en&p=ragnhild+hilder+countess+more&n=hrolfsdatter

her daughter Hilda was born on Orkney and died aged 6
https://gw.geneanet.org/alagergren?n=ragnhild&oc=&p=hilda

...
Isle of Man clan - looks like they were born in Norway - all Vikings obviously - born 1047 in Norway - died in Isle of Man 1080 - so only 33
https://gw.geneanet.org/grethe?n=ragnhild+haraldsdt.&oc=&p=x

Fascinating tree line - I think I am out of my depth here - I would presume that the RAGNHILD Royal Family have their own website ??   having a look - but thanks for the thread - in 15 years of Genealogy that is the first time I have gone back before 1100's and the first time I have seen Royalty ....enjoyed that Research  :) :) :)
ADDED   after reading various sites it would appear that Ragnhild is Norwegian in origin
