Knox and O'Hare of Donabate
« on: Friday 03 November 17 10:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I have been researching family for a while and on my Irish side I have a block for various reasons such that I am now questioning if what I already have is right at all.

My grandfather was John Knox who married Bridget O'Hare in Donabate in 1912.

On the registration John's father is shown as William, coachman and Bridget's father is Thomas O'Hare, GPO sorter.

I haven't been able to find a birth reg for John Knox b. 27 Feb 1888.

Bridget O'Hare's mother was Bridget Ennis (b. abt. June 1859) and (I assume) she must have married Thomas O'Hare abt. 1887 but I can find no record of that.

A few years afterwards Thomas O'Hare must have died as Bridget Ennis then married Michael Tierney in 1896. This making my grandmother a step-daughter of Michael Tierney. I have the 1901 and 1911 census records that confirm this much.

When my grandmother registered births of two of her children (my aunt and uncle) she used a maiden name of Tierney for one and O'Haire (sp) for the other, which sort of makes sense.

I have found a William Knox from Balbriggan (b. 1852) which I at first thought would be John Knox's father but it appears not so, as I think he had two daughters both born 6 months either side of John's birthday. John doesn't show up in that family's census records at all.

Even with the little I am pretty sure of some things don't match up - such as age at death with year of birth for Bridget Ennis. Her age jumps in the census records too. Possibly she was less than honest with Michael about her age when they married!

Details I am fairly sure of:

John Knox b. 27 Feb 1888 d. 23 Sep 1956
Bridget O'Hare b. 1888 d. 24 Sep 1964
John and Bridget married in Donabate 3 Jun 1912
Their children were Bridget, John, Michael, Edward and Margaret.

Bridget Ennis baptised in Donabate on 29 June 1859
Bridget Ennis married Michael Tierney 17 Feb 1896
Bridget Ennis d. 28 Nov 1930 in Donabate. (shows age as 61 rather than 71)

Bridget Ennis's father is Garrett Ennis and mother Elizabeth.

So I am looking for any clues in finding more details for both of my x2gandfathers - William Knox and Thomas O'Hare - and any related Knox and O'Hare family members.

Thanks for any help.

Ted

If you consider maybe that John was not born/registered in Dublin have you checked these??

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01kzt/  Birth results for Knox from 1877 to 1879 , irishgenealogy.

You also have to check the Unknowns, because the Index was used for these and maybe first name omitted but on certs.

Thanks for the quick reply.

The link you gave is for births 10 years too early, but I have looked through the right Uknowns and none have a father of William.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01kzu/ gets you all John Knox on Census in age group, as we don't know Religion you can narrow them down if you do.
