And the NSW BDM's deduced date of birth matches the date of birth on the WWII nominal roll that Sue has linked (oops, add at #5.)    There's also similar entry for same chap with Broken Hill as enlistment location... Service Number : SX915.

I looked at that before, but wasnt sure as there were other James Hughes born in NSW in the same year, but with the WWII enlistment record that you found and Cangai being just down the road from Grafton it is a probable match. Thanks for the help.

But i searched there and all I got was:

EVANS  ELSIE MARION 26941/1984 EDWARD JOHN MARIAN

She is not my Marion.

UPDATE:
The is weird, If i change the search date - instead of putting just 1984, and put from 1980-1986 I got:
EVANS  MARION ELIZABETH 7228/1984 X

I will have to remember that when searching.. Never put in the year you think it is, always put in a range.

The result you got, being clearly written, would be-

The same result will be obtained regardless of whether you place the years with a range in the search box or the exact year from/to

Perhaps you tried to use a second given name as well.
