Apprentice indentures (with a few exceptions for fees paid by charities or parishes) were subject to stamp duty from  1710.

I did the previous posts before rushing out to an appointment! :-[

On reflection, I think Philip is correct - Apprentice Indentures.

But I was on the right track (-ish!) with Stamp Duty ;D ;D

Good afternoon,

They look to me like stamp duty act stamps circa 1760/70. North American George III issue, UK ones were usually coloured I think. Top right hand corner had the value in cents.

Once postage stamps came into use they were used instead in the UK.

Here's a pic of a very similar stamp.  I found it on the site about telegraph stamps of Great Britain.  The page on the site was about stamp sizes so this may not be a telegraph stamp.  However, there is an email address for the person who owns the site and who is obviously very keen and knowledgable about the subject.  I'm sure he could give you some epert advice.

Here's a link to the website. I hope this helps.   http://gb-precancels.org/Telegraphs/sizes.html
