Require parents for Margaret J Stephenson

Hi.

Is the only way to find out the father's name for someone married post 1911, to buy the certificate?

I have Richard Nelmes marrying Margaret J Stephenson in 1940's, Durham and need the latter's father.

In this case, yes you will need to purchase certificate.
All census look up transcriptions are Crown Copyright http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Probably it would be just as well to buy the certificate but a very unscientific way to avoid the certificate
would be to find Margaret J Stephenson's birth on the birth indexes. Then let's say her mother was another Northern name Robson. Then find on Free BMD a Nelmes marrying a Robson and if correct you may have both parents' full names. May be. Post 1911.

She seems to have been alive very recently (husband having died in 2006).  Unless you know the female subject of your inquiry is deceased you're likely to be asked by the moderators to remove her details.

Putting Margaret in as other person
Herbert Stephenson, born 1892

I suspect this is the marriage
