Which regiment?
« on: Monday 27 November 17 00:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Would anyone happen to know what regiment this is, from the photo?  I had previously asked on the handwriting board for help to determine if the word penned on the photo was Daddy or Paddy - Daddy, (my great granddad), was in the Inniskilling fusiliers, 6th battalion and made it to Sergeant, however, Paddy, (his brother), was a sapper!  I now know that the photo is not of the Inniskilling Fusiliers, but wondered what regiment it is and if anyone could shed any light?

Thank you

Michelle

some of these lads look very young so maybe Army Cadets rather than full timers.

Could be one of the Young Soldiers Battalions affiliated to one of the Scots Regiments. These were training Batts producing soldiers for General Service.
I looked at 53rd YS battalion affiliated to HLI but cap badge doesn't seem to match.

Looking in the other direction, the Patrick Doran who joined the RFA on 13 Jan 1915 said he was 19yrs 9 months and that he had not served before.  He would have been 20 in early 1915.  He was discharged in July 1915 "not  likely to become an efficient soldier".  Whether he then went on to join the outfit pictured - pass.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies - yes Paddy's service record reads like a game of hide and seek - with him consistently, on a once a month basis, being found in nearby towns after getting drunk and fighting - he spent a lot of time confined to barracks and also given 14 days field punishment 2 - at this time he was in the O.C. 52nd reserve battery RFA - both his father and brother were also in the military but they behaved themselves and came away with medals etc.  The photo is one found amongst the family album - there were a number of Johns and Paddy's so although the record is true to my great Uncle Paddy the man on the photo could possibly be his cousin or father depending on when the photo was taken lol

Many thanks for taking a look

Would I be right in saying 1 officer, 1 big drummer, 5 side drummers, rest buglers, 1 irish hound.
Officer with 2 medals, 1 in middle row no cap with medal, all with same cap badge and apart from officer, all under age 21 ?
Would that be a typical group for an army unit "band" ?
