John Tout or Towt
« on: Saturday 02 December 17 06:03 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for John Towt/Tout, a carpenter,  born about 1819 who emigrated to Australia (Port Phillip) on the Duchess of Northumberland in 1841. He became a successful builder in Brighton, Victoria and  bought land and settled in Balwyn, Victoria.
On a birth certificate of his daughter in Australia he states he came from Down St Mary.   However, I can find no records of his birth or parentage although I am aware that there were families named Tout/Towt in Down St. Mary.
I realise that the name is fairly common in Devon.
John Towt's life in Australia is fairly well documented - but little is known of his time in Devon.
Any help would be appreciated, marp

Cannot be the John Tout shown in 1841 census which was taken on 6th Jun 1841. The Duchess of Northumberland arrived in Port Phillip Australia on 3rd June 1841 having left Plymouth on 17 Feb 1841.
Interestingly the 1851 census shows a John TOUT (occ: Smith) born Down St Mary 1822 and he appears to be at home with his parents in 1841 - William (Blacksmith) & Jane. I couldn't locate a baptism for him either.

I found a baptism for a John Tout from St Giles-in-the-Wood, Devon who was the right age but was listed in the 1841 census (in St Giles-in-the-Wood).  As the census was undertaken a few days after the Duchess of Northumberland arrived at Port Phillip this ruled him out.

It is always a bit tricky when someone states they were 'from' a certain place as it does not necessarily mean they were born/baptised there.    On his daughter's birth certificate in Australia, he certainly wrote he was from  'Down St. Mary, Devonshire'.

Is there nothing on his Marriage or Death Cert that would help locate his Parents?

Is this his Burial?;
16 Oct 1887 • Moonambel, Victoria
If so he was born c 1813

Now a Tree has his Parents as JOHN/HARRIET nee Bertram.
No extra details on them.
I wonder if they have a Death Cert stating that?

Familysearch.Org has a Marriage;
20 March 1804   Saint Sidwell, Exeter, Devon
John TOUT to Harriot BARTRUM

Children on F/S.Org;
WILLIAM 15 October 1815
ANN 12 October 1817
Mint Lane Wesleyan, Exeter, Devon
These 2 are also noted on same date as being christened Cullompton, Devon

I cant find any children 1805-1814 to them on F/S.Org

Ok;
Anc has image of William 1815's Baptism;
Son of John/Harriet Tout, Parish of St Mary Major Exeter

So you may be looking for a non-conformist Baptism for John if this is the right Parents.

Trish :)

"An intriguing piece of information was unearthed when researching this article in that John is li
sted
on the 1841 British census as residing in St Giles village with his mother Johannah aged 43, sister
Hannah and his maternal grandmother Ann Welch aged 72. This is something of a mystery as the
1841 census collection night was 6 June 1841, that is 3 days after John landed in Port Phillip Bay.
One can only speculate as to why the head of household (John’s widowed mother) gave incorrect
information to the census collector."
