GORDON Family of Market Weighton and Pocklington
« on: Sunday 10 December 17 11:51 GMT (UK) »
It is thought that my GORDON ancestors originated in Fife, Scotland and came to the East Riding (via Northumberland) around 1840. First sighting is in the 1841 Census for William GORDON (b abt 1800 in Northumberland) and family. No sighting for 1861 but appeared in Pocklington for census of 1871, 1881 and 1891. The family appear to have also dispearsed to Langtoft, Bridlington and York. By 1900 my direct known family were in County Durham where my grandmother was born in 1900.

My William and descendants were shepherds. How do I attach a photo?

I wonder whether any of my GORDON family still live in the East Riding?

Rosie,

I have posted a photograph which includes my William GORDON (1831-1898) on the Resources & Offers board.

The 1841 Census (HO107; Piece: 1220; Book: 9; Page:10) for South Gate, Market Weighton includes:

William GORDON, age 40, born 1801
Ann [nee HALL], age 30, born 1811, Yorkshire
Thomas, age 13, born 1818, Yorkshire
William, age 10, born 1831, Yorkshire
Edward, age 7, born 1834, Yorkshire
Mary, age 0, born 1841, Yorkshire

The 1871 Census (RG10; Piece: 4759; Folio: 8; Page:9) for Union Street, Pocklington includes:

William GORDON, age 40, shepherd, born Market Weighton
Mary GORDON [nee DUNN], age 33, born Hambro', Yorks
William GORDON, age 7, scholar, born Molescroft, Yorks
John GORDON, age 6, born Molescroft
Tom GORDON, age 2, born Pocklington
Edward GORDON, age 3 months, born Pocklington

On 18 November 1898, my William GORDON age 68 committed suicide in Pocklington which appeared in the Hull Daily Mail on 22 November. Apparently the press also mentioned that his brother hung himself 14 years earlier but I cannot find any such ancestor.

Associated surnames include ATKINSON/FRYAR/REVELL/SCRUTTON and possibly STEEl.

Have you tried to trace William bn c1800 Northumberland any further back than 1841

I wonder whether any of my GORDON family still live in the East Riding?

You would need to follow the family through from census then try tracing them with birth, marriage & death information.  The 1939 register may also help you .

Hi again, do you have William b c 1831 in 1861 census, as their appears to be a William Gordon aged 28 occ Shepherd b Market Weighton in Beverley working for a George Longsdale?
Census ref RG09/3572/93/8

In 1851 census he is aged 20 occ Shepherd b Market Weighton working for a William Bainton in Beverley
Census ref HO107/2359/202/11

OK intrigued by your findings that when William Gordon b 1831 commited suicide in 1898 it was stated that his brother had hung himself 14 years earlier.
From the 1841 census would I be correct he had two brothers Thomas b 1828 and Edward 1834 Market Weighton, in 1851 census Thomas 22 occ Shepherd is working for an Elizabeth Usher in Sculcoates
Census ref HO107/2360/429/19

Edward aged 17 occ Shepherd is working for a Robert Kirby in Pocklington
Census ref HO107/2357/589/7
Have you tracked these two?
