I'm certain the birth certificate I'm looking at is the right one though. There were no other Emily Jervis born anywhere in the Uk for a 2 year period, age is correct, middle name is the same, address at birth and address at marriage a 15 minute walk from each other.

A possible death reg of Emily Elizabeth Smith in Lambeth in 1988 gives d-o-b 6 Sep 1896
And Emily E Smith with that birthdate can be found in Camberwell in 1939 free search, with George W Smith, born 1893.
Also, George P, born 1921, and Stanley R, born 1923
Registrations for them in Camberwell, mother Jervis

So if the birth certificate has that date on it then it's the right one!
John

There are Workhouse admissions for Henry and George Alfred in 1890 and a tree for George Alfred (although no parents nor birthplace are shown). The interesting thing is that George also emigrated to Ontario, Canada.

This makes sense, James Jervis died in Jan 1890 and the poor boys sent to the workhouse in the April. Maria keeps Mary with her.

If I'm right that Maria did die in 1898 then it makes sense that her 2 children might emigrate, no parents left. I will try and see what became of Henry

Here is Mary E in 1911 in Canada

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV9G-5R5V

Henry and George may well have gone to Canada with Dr Barnardos. There is mention of those names in the ‘Ups and Downs’ magazine in April 1900 ‘bringing out their sister’ who would be Mary E probably as that is the same year referred to in the Tree.

I found the reference by trawling through the magazine and have tried to post a link but it just goes to the beginning but it only says what is reported on the link I posted above.

According to a tree Henry married Henrietta Hunter in Ontario. No obvious connection to Mary E’s husband George A Hunter.
This is the same Henry as in the tree

I know it doesn’t help with Emily but it adds to the family.

According to 1921 census, Mary E went out in 1900 (if year remembered accurately).

George Alford Hunter is recorded as George Alfred Hunter.

It's really interesting thank you. In the ups and downs magazine it says that the 2 brothers each paid half for their sister's fare to Canada.

I wish I could find Emily though. Apparently there was a "sister" (of whom I don't know) who lived in Somerset and I have found that Maria Pearcey's mother Harriet Ford was from Taunton so am going to look at her family. It's possible that Emily's aunt was actually a great aunt I suppose

Have you tracked all Maria’s siblings?
