Looks like they may have lost three children by 1891:   Martha born 1897, Robert born 1886 and Frederick born 1882.     I shall see if I can find those records.

Oh, very sad.     Though isn't Daniel the eldest child?    According to the 1891 census, that is.    Can you see him anywhere?

I found Robert and Fred who died as babies and little Martha when she was 3.

Oh.    This is odd.    The 1891 census for the family shows a child called John W Wilson who is 7, so  born 1884 ish.

However, there is a death record for a John Wildman Wilson who was born and died in Kendal in 1889.

There is also one for a baby shown just as John Wilson in 1888 in Kendal.

What do you make of that?

WILDMAN, DANIEL       -
1881  March Quarter in KENDAL  Volume 10B  Page 697

No mothers maiden name showing so probably illegitimate and born before the marriage

I think you may mean the 1901 census  ;)

Duh, yes.    Blind AND balmy. 8)     So, it's looking like the John Wildman Wilson showing in the 1901 census, born in 1894, is actually John Wildman Wilson mark 2.    Got it.     Thanks for the Daniel reference, too.    Illegitimacy is probably the answer if they got married in 1881 as well.

Just wondering - can you find Elizabeth Wilson (this John's mother) anywhere in the 1861 census?     I'm thinking that as this was around the time that her daughter Elizabeth was born, she should be in the census in Devon, with John, born 1854 and Robert the Dad, possibly (unless he is elsewhere with the army) but I can't find her.

Ooooh.  Holland, eh?    That's interesting.     It certainly doesn't sound very Irish, and that's where Robert's wife is supposed to come from.     But thanks for that.   I'll see if I can find their marriage now.
