Bluepits [Methodist?] Chapel, Castleton, Rochdale?
« on: Tuesday 02 January 18 15:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm searching for a baptism record; I've found it via FamilySearch, but not via Ancestry or LOPC (presumably as it's a Methodist chapel).

Name:   Walter Clegg
Residence Place:   Lancashire, England
Gender:   Male
Christening Date:   17 Jul 1877
Christening Date (Original):   17 Jul 1877
Christening Place:   Bluepits Chapel, Rochdale, Lancaster, England
Father's Name:   Samuel Clegg
Mother's Name:   Elizabeth Clegg

I can't seem to find any info about the chapel itself though; where it was, whether it still exists, where the baptism records actually are.... I think I found something here that might mean the records are found in 'Touchstones Rochdale'? [https://link4life.org/images/pdfs/local-history-books/parish-register-9th-ed.pdf]

I searched the forums here and can only find reference to Bluepits as a place, rather than as a chapel. Has anyone ever come across it before?

Might it be this? http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Rochdale/Rochdale/unionst/index.html

Thanks :)

On www.british-history.ac.uk

45. The Congregational Church at Castleton, formerly Blue Pits, originated in 1866; a school chapel was built in 1870; Nightingale, Lancs. Nonconf. iii, 253.

The reference is to book by Nightingale called Lancashire Nonconformity volume 3 page 253

It would seem it possibly became the Castleton Congregational Church
