Thanks for those examples.

It's very clear that the third letter is an x, so we have Boxoor or Boxoar.

Probably just as JenB said - an idiosyncratic spelling.

Thank you. I had already searched for those two variations without joy. Also for mentions of an educated or middle-class "James Thompson" in Gateshead, Jarrow, Shields or Newcastle who might have been the society treasurer.

(Sigh) This testator's ghost really does not want to be examined. This will is the only documentation of his ever existence that I have found in years of searching. I started the New Year off by re-examining him, hence this thread, but ... I guess he'll have to go back into the probable-but-not-yet-proven file.
