Thomas Carmichael b1831 - Military Hospital , Vauxhall Road, London
« on: Monday 08 January 18 11:35 GMT (UK) »
Trying to trace the death of my great great grandfather Thomas Carmichael born 15 May 1831 at New Kilpatrick, Scotland. Thomas had served in the Fusilier Guards, Windsor from July 1849 to August 1852, Army Number 3881. He was involved in the Crimean War 1855/56 and in the American Civil War with the US (2nd) Cavalry, Maryland. Last known contact was in May 1866 in the Scots Fusiliers, then on 25 July 1869 as a patient in the Military Hospital, Vauxhall Road, London.
Family names and connections I’m researching.

No answers yet, just a couple of questions:

What was Thomas's wife's name? Have you found her on a census after 1869?  If she was described as a widow, this could help narrow down a date of death.

Please help me to help you by citing sources for information.

If the Thomas Carmichael is the one discharged from the Scots Fusilier Guards effective 12 Oct 1869 having served since 1857 with a 6 years desertion 1860-1866 and wounded while fighting in the American Civil War, then his intended place of residence on discharge was given as Alexandria (presumably Dunbartonshire rather than Egypt) which may give a steer as to where to look.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

In the 1871 Census his wife , Eliza Carmichael is recorded as Married, Head  age 40, residing in Bonhill, Alexandria, along with her children John (16) Janet (13) and Thomas (4)

Family research carried out a good few years back placed him in the Military Hospital at Vauxhall Road on 25 July 1869...but we know nothing of him after then. Thanks.

Speculation - his military record was decidedly flaky, having been discharged perhaps he just didn't go back to Alexandria, the thought may have occurred to you!
