Help! Quarndon Questions!z
« on: Sunday 21 January 18 18:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to solve the mystery of Bertha Robson.
She was born around 1891/2 in Quarndon, Derbyshire.
Her mother was called Mary Jane Robson (maiden name Jones)
Her father was my great grandfather Ernest Robson.
I think she may have been born before or soon after they were married.
Ernest and his wife moved to Taunton where he was a professional cricketer for Somerset County.
But Bertha doesn’t appear to have lived with them.
She appears with her mother in Yorkshire in 1901 at Ernest’s sisters house (Eliza Smith) and then in 1911 at another sisters house in Stockton on Tees. (Family name of Clark)
I have no idea what happened to her or why she never was part of the family.
I cannot find who is on her birth certificate or whether she was married or any trace of her death.
She is known in the census as Bertha Robson but she may have been registered as Jones.
On the census it has Quarndon as “Tuarndon”
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Certainly she looks to be earlier than the marriage.

Marriages Jun 1892   (>99%)
Jones    Mary Jane        Stockport    8a   147
ROBSON    Ernest        Stockport    8a   147
Slack    Samuel        Stockport    8a   147
Thompson    Charlotte        Stockport    8a   147

The birth reg shows either no maiden name, or an illegible maiden name.

Quarndon is in the Registration District of Belper.
SO, this birth looks good:

December qtr 1891
Belper Registration District     vol 7b, page 552

Robson, Bertha

The entry on the GRO Index search has no mother's maiden name - usual indicating an illegitimate birth.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Hi,

A very warm welcome to Rootschat!

Could this be her marriage? Having been in the Stockton area in 1911.

From FreeBMD:

Robson, Bertha to Hammond, Robert S; Dec Qtr 1922; Stockton reg dist; Volume 10a Page 137.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

1911 census:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWH8-BWW

1901: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9RH-8S8

It doesn't actually state that Bertha is the child of Mary Jane (Nee Jones).
The point that Bertha appears before Mary Jane implies to me that she is another's daughter.
Did Ernest have any other sisters?

Hi,

A possible death?

From FreeBMD:

Hammond, Bertha; Dec Qtr 1969; Durham S.E. reg dist; born 28 Sept 1892; Volume 1a, Page 1644.

Wonder if a year was knocked off her age to legitimise her?

Durham S.E covered the Stockton area at this time.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

David

Thanks for that. Ernest had many sisters!
Mary Jane (to add confusion!) born 1857,
Julia, b 1868
Matilda b 1872
Eliza b 1875
Some of his siblings were born in Chapel Allerton and some in Derbyshire.
