Mystery of USA birth
« on: Thursday 01 February 18 22:23 GMT (UK) »
I am not sure if this is the right board, but here goes....I am researching the Crick family, Frederick Crick b.1832 married Sarah Ann Mist b.1833, their first born Nellie Louise Crick was born in Staten Island New York in 1855. I have access to Ancestry but not worldwide so wondered if anyone could help in finding out if the whole family went to New York, when they went and if there is a birth certificate for Nellie anywhere. The rest of the children were born in Leicestershire.

Thanks
Brenda

I see from the 1861 census that the next child was born 1857, so the family must have returned between 1855 - 1857. Her father was single in Leicester in 1851, so there isn't a very wide window for their time in the US. Her parents  married in New York on 16 September 1853.

Which explains why I could not find marriage dates!

I Wonder if there is any record on any sailings around that time, I will look on Ancestry.

That is really interesting, wonder why they went and then came back!

Thank you for your help

Unfortunately I think most passenger records are a lot later.

There is a Sophie Ann MIST arriving new York aged 14 1849

Btw you could ask moderator s to move post to the USA board  . Americans may be able to do these searches better .
I can try looking on the Ellis island site if I can remember how to get on it ...

Frederick must have been back by December 1856 as he was granted a loan of £100 by Thomas White's Charity.  It seems to be a business loan of some sort, and at the time he was described as aged 24 & a trimmer of Mill Lane.

The Thomas White Loan Charity still exists, and Leicester Records Office has some of their historic records so there may be something within them that could shed some light on why Frederick was in America:

There was a Frederick Crick who arrived in NY in 1853 BUT he was reportedly a farmer born in Ireland in 1824 and he claimed he was heading to Canada.
