Andrew GALBRAITH
« on: Monday 05 February 18 16:47 GMT (UK) »
I have one entry on the medal index for the Military Medal, gazette on the 17th December 1917 but can find no other medals attributed and cannot find his service record. I know he was a sergeant in the 56th Highland Royal Field Artillery but have no ther details of him. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

If no medals awarded means he didn't serve overseas.
His service record is probably one of the 70% that were destroyed in the Blitz.
Edit:
Medal Roll says he was awarded the 15 Star, BW & Victory Medals while in the RGA.
Also same on his MIC.
No's. 136, 357148 & 645116 is this him ?

I might suggest you were looking at the Medal Roll which has his MM penned in.
Top of the page says Victory & BW Roll.

56th Highland Royal Field Artillery
Where has this come from?
The Highland RFA had 3 Brigades. All TF.
His 15 Star qualifying date is 5/6/15 Theatre France.

I am not very good at posting images. I found another entry on Findmypast in the British Campaign, Gallantry and Long Service Medals and Awards Transcriptions and in the Royal Artillery military Medal awards transcription.

If the Military Medal is correct would there be a record anywhere else?

There may be some information in the Brigade diary.
This is why I've questioned the info you have as there wasn't a 56th. Highland RFA as far as I know.

His MM record is misleading.  His has his unit as 56th (Highland) DAC RFA ie 56 (Highland) (which didn't exist as Jim say) Divisional Ammunition Column RFA.

However, below is a clue.  That says (in shorthand) attached 51st/ V Heavy Trench Mortar Battery.

As the 51st was THE Highland Division, I'd suggest that 56th is a clerical error.

The war diary for the Div TMBs 95/2584/7 does record the attachment of men from the DAC in July 1917 although I find no MM reference (doesn't mean it isn't there!).. I haven't looked at the %1 Dic DAC diary.
