Hi,
In 1859 there is a record of Caleb and another guy, in the Petty Sessions and it mentions of John Buckingham, I did see that Adelaide, Caleb's sister married him.
I have sent it Private Message.

I think it's William Clough and a Caleb Cosby as complainants and John Buckingham as the prisoner who was remanded in custody.

It was  something to do with a crime against a child (can't make it out). Adelaide's son was a Caleb Cosby b. 1852. Could the Caleb mentioned be this one (the child), not the brother.

The family are at RG10/1561/46/20 in 1871

Also this Caleb (aged 25) married Ann Chandler on 26 Sept 1875, Leighton Buzzard.

Gadget

Thanks Gadget,
Adelaide and John were prosecuted by William Clough on behalf of the 9 year old Caleb for aggrevated assault on a child which is absolutely awful. I guess the risk you take when researching family history is that you might find people that have done terrible things.
What makes it worse is that this poor lad had to stay with them. In later census records they appear to move away and change their surname to buckmaster perhaps the parents were kicked out of town. They come back. She also had another illegitimate son called Joseph Cosby. Adelaide and John don't appear to have children together. Amazingly Caleb later goes on to have a daughter called Adelaide, you would have thought he wouldn't want anything to do with her.
Thanks again for your help.

See the trial report in the Bedfordshire Mercury of 23 May 1859, page 8. The child's name is reported as Caleb Crosby, aged 8,  illegitimate son of Adelaide. John Buckingham got 6 months hard labour, Adelaide 3 months hard labour for a series of aggravated assaults on the child.

Thank you for the information, I don't have access to the newspapers so it is interesting to know the back ground. I wish I could go back in time to look after him and get him away from them. Thanks for your help.

Hi Bev,
Thanks for that, I had never seen anything with his description on it before.
The whole family seems to get in the wrong side of the law!
Jabez emigrated to Adelaide in Australia in 1849 and seems to cause trouble their too.
Caleb and Jabez's father James seems to have been a person who paid the poor on behalf of the over seers and they had a problem with some rioters, perhaps this was the start of a slippery slope. I need to get access to the newspapers to find out more. Strangely many of the cosbys seem to leave Leighton Buzzard in the 1870s and end up in Westfield, Massechusetts. At around this time another family who one of the Cosbys marries into change their name from Draper to Smith or Draper-Smith. I am trying to find out if it has anything to do with Caleb vanishing.
Thank you for the information.
All the best :)

Should've mentioned that the record is on this site.

I find it useful for my Bedfordshire wrong-doing ancestors.
