Ah! A Cartwright LEES age 30 occ:Minder married an Elizabeth BRIERLEY age 25 Occ:Reeler father Samuel at Oldham Oct 1874.

Was she a Spinster?

So did Cartwright Lees take his wife's maiden name? Apart from as a witness on the marriage I can't find him anywhere else.

Or is this Mary Ann's birth - no mother given so illegitimate ( fits with later date of marriage as well)

Therefore when asked for her father's name she gave him as Cartwright Brierley to look respectable? In fact Cartwright Lees was her step father and probably not related at all!
