I thought this might be him in 1901

James Brown    49   Tinley, Northumberland, England   Tea? Traveller   Married
Boarder    Living in Chorlton  RG13 Piece 3698 Folio 29 Page: 16

The 1909 marriage document for his son, Albert Litgardwood Brown, lists his father as a traveller as well.  There is no notation that the father is deceased, which doesn't always mean he is, but the same vicar has noted deceased for other fathers on the same page and others.

That looks good.  From memory - James is listed with the same occupation in 1911

Yes - free index for 1911 has him in Manchester with birthplace of “Pinley”, Northumberland.

For James's family  in 1861 and 1871 look on Anc  for George Brown born 1824 Dunbar, East  Lothian, Scotland.   

If you also add George's spouse Margaret Lidgerwood to the search it should also give you submitted  family trees for the family.   Whilst treating them with caution they should  help you with other census years
