Bicton Asylum Records
« on: Thursday 15 February 18 10:51 GMT (UK) »
I know that my Gt Gt Grandfather died in Bicton Lunatic Asylum (Shropshire) in Jan 1889.  I believe he was born c. 1810.  Is it possible to find any records which will give such details as when he was admitted (& even perhaps some personal info) ?

You could try the census records- 1871 has been posted online (no need for any subscriptons) and the indexes are also available on familysearch. But you might find him only entered as initials on some census (1871 shows names)

Found my way here today as just discovered that a 2 cousin x2 was admitted and discharge early in 1908.

Hadn't been able to understand why she was still in her home county until her death in 1965, when husband and children were in his home county of Durham, certainly from 1901, and for the rest of their lives.  Would love to know the story, but of course very likely never to.

Having searched around, I see that Shropshire Archives may be of help, but does anyone know if
1) you can apply for a readers ticket if not in the county
2) can copies of documents be purchased, and emailed, or are they only viewable at the Archives?

Susan

They will copy stuff for a fee- I contacted them some time ago and they got back to me with a form to fill out but I have never managed to get organised to send them money (from another country) and get them to look at records
