Sussanah Causton 1830 - 1906
« on: Sunday 11 March 18 21:29 GMT (UK) »
Help.
I am trying to trace my wife's Great Grandmother & her parents.
I have positive information from 1861 When she married John Berry White 1820 - 1888 Her father is named as John Causton (Decorator) & also the 1861 Census which shows her as born in Shoreditch Middlesex. I also have positive info. up to her death in 1906.
1851 census she was possibly a servant in Cambridge (Sussana Cortton)
1841 she is aged 11 & in the St. Lukes workhouse Shoreditch (Sush Coston)
So far I have been unable to find anything about her father, mother or any more info about her time in the workhouse.

Are there any similar surnames in the 1841 with her that could be family members, younger siblings perhaps?

Going sideways a bit there's a Thomas S Causton born abt 1831 Shoreditch with wife Rachel and children in 1881.

If his father was John a decorator he could be a sibling to Sussanah.

Forget that one his father was Henry.

There is a John Coston marrying in Shoreditch 1830 to Eleanor Vale.

The John Coston who married Eleanor Vale appears in the 1851 Census in Soutwark Christ Church, Surrey & is a Labourer & I cannot see a relationship to Sussanah.  He also has a son John aged 22 born Christchurch. So this does not look likely.
Have you any idea how I can see more about the workhouse.
Thanks

Not necessarily connected, but I see there is another pauper child, Esther Coston, 7 b Shoreditch, in workhouse accommodation in 1841 1851 (Baker Street Shoreditch Nursery, in Enfield).

Amended because I got the date wrong - sorry.

What is your feeling about her description as "cousin" in 1861?

As she married John later that year (1861) & was described as Housekeeper I didn't take too much notice of the cousin bit & thought she was referred to that for convenience. I also have not seen any other Causton's in the tree
