Army Barracks in Chilham early 19th Century?
« on: Saturday 17 March 18 13:50 GMT (UK) »
Please can anyone tell me if there were Army Barracks in Chilham early in the 19th Century? If not, was there a site or camp where soldiers/militia men stayed for training or deployment?  I saw a very brief reference buried in a book about something else and haven't been able to find any more about it online.

The reason I want to know is because I am researching a man who fathered a child in Chilham and I want to prove that a certain militia man is the same chap.

I thought about posting this query on the Armed Forces board but reckoned local Kent knowledge might prove better in this instance.

Dont know if this helps. Doesnt say where Militia was based.

WILDMAN, James (1747-1816), of Chilham Castle, Kent.
Capt. E. Kent vol. inf. 1803, 1 E. Kent militia 1811.

Also you may find some info here .

Hello Grandarog

Thank you for your reply to my query.  I might get somewhere by investigating James Wildman as he was obviously an officer, so likely to find more records about him.

Cheers,

Did the book you mentioned definitely refer to the 19th century?
Have you seen the actual baptism entry? Parish registers round Barham Downs often refer in marriage and baptisms to men being "from the camp" during the early 1800s.

Thanks, Top of the Hill

I was given the details of the baptism entry in a different post some time ago.

Yes, the book referred to troops being quartered at Chilham end of 18th/beginning of 19th century.

Is Barham Downs the area around Chilham?

About 10 miles as the crow flies, probably far enough not to be relevant to your search. The Downs were a favourite place for mustering troops down through the ages - usually on their way to fight the French!
