Maddoms, Madlam, Absalom ?
« on: Thursday 22 March 18 10:19 GMT (UK) »
For years have been looking for a Martha Maddoms born about 1755 in the area around STEVENTON
My husband's gt x3 grandparents were Robert and Martha ROBY
Robert married Martha Maddons 25 Dec 1776 in Steventon  ( Family Search)
(Some on An...try have inturpreted the name as Madlam)
I thought I would use the net to see how many Marthas were baptised in the area and found on FAMILY search a baptism for Martha Absalom 8 June 1755.
Is it possible for Absalom to look like Maddons or Madlam do you think?
Is anyone likely to be going to the RO in Reading soon? and if so would they look at the marriage record to see if it was possible to be for Absalom rather tham Maddoms?

25 Dec 1776 in Steventon Robert ROBY and Martha ??

Oxfordshire FHS transcribed her surname as MADDONS.  (OFHS CD AB-03)

Robert was from Charney apparently, if that helps :-\

Sorry for delay, food intervened ;D

I don't have anything for East Lockinge I'm afraid, so you'll need a local look-up as Berkshire PR images aren't online anywhere.  (You probably know that already!)

My opinion, for what it's worth, is that you have three similar interpretations from OFHS (who are usually very good), Ancestry users, and Family Search.  All of them begin with MAD, and I can't see that as a misreading of ABS(ALOM).  Still, stranger things have happened ::)

Hope you aren't driven MAD waiting!

Not at all just trying to find a slot in the diary for a trip to Reading Its a long shot and I'm clutching at straws but it will be worth eliminating it  if nothing better its a long term problem thans for your input  :)

Hi Trees,

In the East Lockinge records (ex Berks FHS) Martha Absalom d/o John & Elizabeth bapt 18-5-1755

No sign of the parents marriage in EL nor can I find Robert Roby's bapt in either Steventon or Charney Bassett.
I've seen the name "Roby"  in other parishes so will have a look around the records I have.

Hi Trees,
All I have found so far are these entries, some or all of which you may already know of;

Stanford in the Vale;
16-1-1739 Robert Roeby s/o Edward & Martha (born 12-1) (just a couple of variants; Rowby, Robey)
I think you can discount this entry - see below.

Charney Bassett;
14-1-1756 Robert Robey s/o Robert & Anamaria

Charney Bassett;
bur. 18-9-1819 Martha Roby (aged 64)
  "     3-6-1828 Robert Robey (aged 72)  Obviously the Robert bapt 1756

Hi RIBBO good to meet up again and thank you for looking for me.Yes the Robert and Martha deaths are for Robert and Martha nee MADDOMS? and Robert and Ann Maria nee Weston were his parents. I don't think the Robert baptised and born  1739 is Robert Snr though as they married in 1754 and he'd have been 15 but I wonder was Edward an Uncle?
I need to see the original marriage entry for Robert and Martha don't I could it be something that just looks like MADDONS??
