Kitty Harry born Kapunda South Australia 1864
« on: Monday 02 April 18 08:27 BST (UK) »
I have been unable to find a South Australian birth Registration for Kitty Harry said to have been 10 May 1864.
Her parents William Henry Harry , Mary Hancock (Minear), together with three young children arrived Port Adelaide 7 April 1864 on "Ocean Chief" after a voyage of about 91 days.
I think this must mean that she was born soon after arrival.

She married William Henry Treloar 24 Sep 1885 (by Rev. J. C. Hill) at the residence of her parents.

Assistance appreciated.

There is a birth registration 1865 for Ellen Harry d 1866 and then another birth registrtaion for Ellen Harry b 1867.www.genealogysa.org.au But nothing for Kitty Harry b 1864. I suppose its entirely possible that the parents neglected to register her after the voyage. You would expect her full name to be Katherine.
SA records are thin on the ground online.. it requires a visit to the SA state Archives in Adelaide which is often not an option.

Thank you Stephanie
I can only guess that her parents forgot to register her so soon after the voyage.
So far as I can see the daughter Ellen died an in infant and a second child named Ellen was born 1867. She survived.
All evidence I have identifies her as Kitty ie newspaper announcement of her 1885 marriage and her death 1939 identify her as Kitty.

Unfortunately I reside in Victoria and a visit to S. A. Archives is not possible.

I am now confused by this death registration:

Name: Kitty Treloar
Birth Year: abt 1864
Age: 75
Death Place: Warracknabeal, Victoria
Father's name: Wm Hy Harry
Mother's name: Mary Davey
Registration Year: 1939
Registration Place: Victoria
Registration Number: 19584

Appears to be her but mothers name Minear not Davey.

Is it possible that the mother Mary had been married previously? So that DAVEY was her maiden name and MINEAR the first marriage? Where did they marry?

Modified to add:
I see, In St Austell, Cornwall in 1853. Says she was single (and a minor)

Children and/or informant on death certificate may not know a woman's maiden name.

Looking for Mary Minear's baptism in Cornwall, if I have the right person, it seems her surname came from her mother. The marriage certificate does not have a father's name. Perhaps she told family that her father's name was Davey?
It may be that Mary's mother Jane married James Werry. They have a Mary Werry aged 5 living with them on the 1841 Census. Could Werry/Davey be confused?
http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/

Details of the marriage of Kitty from SA index (you mentioned only having the newspaper item)
William Henry TRELOAR married Kitty HARRY 24 Sep 1885
Groom 26, single, father John Jenkins Treloar, Bride 21, single father William Henry Harry
Married at the Res of Mr Harry Hawker District Fro
Book/Page 144/1195

With 3 other little ones, new babe and new country to worry about, seems quite likely that Kitty's birth was not registered.

Yes, I wondered about the WERRY/DAVEY possibility.

James WERRY appears to have died in Sept qtr 1841 (aged 24), and Jane remarried William YOULTON on 25 Dec 1844.

Thank you Maddys52 and Stephanie.
I am following through on your suggestions.
The 1836 marriage of mother Jane to Werry and 1844 marriage when a widow to Youlton seem to fit the criteria.

At her 1853 marriage Mary is identified as Mary Hancock Minear.
I can;t see any Hancock in the mixing pot.

The record of her marriage to Youlton states that her father was Joseph Minear.

What a mess.
