I believe the surname may start with 'L'  (although in the case of Mary Ann - it does look like a second letter of 'U' which would follow 'Q' ).

What you see on the certificates was the fairly standard way of writing the letter 'q', which looked rather like a number 2. I can remember being taught to write it that way in the mid 1950's.

So the vicar wasn't being creative with the ink, he was just doing 'proper' handwriting  :D

I love old documents including the creative 'proper' hand writing which I believe is much better than the 'biro' inked in the recent past and 'text' speak type without paper these days.

I was just injecting a bit a humour to the request :D
