Finding where my grandmother Leah Weatherburn is buried, please help!
« on: Monday 09 April 18 11:42 BST (UK) »
Leah Weatherburn died at The County Asylum, in 1917.
Was registered at Sedgefield County Durham, Northern England.
It is believed that a headstone was dedicated to her, we would be
extremely grateful for help to determine where she is buried.

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

A lot of the people who died at Winterton were interred at Sedgefield Cemetery. Have you looked there? Sadly, I can't see that the cemetery records are online. http://sedgefieldtowncouncil.gov.uk/sedgefield-cemetery/

The Asylum also had its own church, St Luke, consecrated in 1884, with its own burial ground, operating from 1891. This also not transcribed yet (more details here https://durhamrecordsonline.com/updates/2010/03/sedgefield-burials-1855-1926/ )

Where else have you looked?  Where did she live before she was placed in Winterton?

Sincere thanks for the reply.
Information is vague. The
death certificate, 23/05/1917, noted her former
address was,
Willsdene ,Neville's Cross, Chester - le- Street.
That belonged to her two step sisters
There were no family members, present at her death.

I have visited sites that disclosed  Leah
must be buried else where.
Regards,
RJP.

Thanks for the reply.
Only information from her death certificate,
was that her former address before admission was,
Willsdene, Neville's Cross, Chester- le- street, her step sisters
lived there.

I have visited sites of burial details in County Durham,
which imply she is elsewhere.
Regards,
RJP

Unless the family were pretty wealthy and there have been generations since to take care of the grave, you'd be very lucky if you can find an actual headstone.

Far better to check with the cemetery office first and ask them to look in their records and tell you if she is buried there, where her grave is and whether it does have a headstone to view.

Good luck

Carol

Carol, I was about to say exactly the same thing  :)

RJP, please can you say exactly where you have checked for burials? Have you already checked Sedgefield Cemetary and Winterton itself?

 Good afternoon Carol,
Thank you most sincerely for the offer.
I have just become aware that The Headstone,
was an unfortunate error, many apologies.

At Butterwich Road and Salters Lane cemeteries,
negative results. It may well be the largest at :) St Edmund's.
 Thanks again.
 Rob

It’s not clear if you’ve actually looked at the Burial Records for these two Cemeteries, or whether you’ve just visited them to look for a headstone?
