He also seems to be unborn, as I can't find a birth registration for him either to check if he had more than one forename.

Hannah's maiden name appears to be Hatton, but the first male I can find a registration for is Thomas in 1849.  There is a baptism for William in 1848 but I haven't found anything for James other than the census.

Great find Christine  :)

James & Martha married in St Ives RD in the December quarter of 1871, just as James Relton vanishes.  I'd say its certainly worth investing in the certificate.

ah wow I think you're right. thankyou

James Hatton is also on the 1911 census and his death is 1916 Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire

Wonder why he suddenly adopted his mother's maiden name in the 1870s...

He also appears to be born in Woodhurst, Huntingdonshire on 1851 Census,

and born in Hounslow, Middlesex on 1871 Census

He is listed as born Hounslow in 1861 & 1871 census when living at home with 'parents'  :-\

I wonder where that came from  ;D

very mysterious and seemingly random isn't it.

obviously a long way from Woodhurst, Huntingdonshire and for it to appear on TWO census's as if it wasn't an error. very odd...

William & Hannah were married in the December quarter of 1844 and James is aged 7 on the census taken 30 Mar 1851, so if this is accurate then he would have been born before they married, which could account for the Hounslow reference as well as the lack of birth registration.

If William isn't his biological father, then perhaps he was registered under his real father's surname, or not registered at all.
