Looking for Missing Parents After Possible Name Change
« on: Sunday 15 April 18 01:59 BST (UK) »
Hello, family historians!
I am very new to genealogy, but anxious to get to work. My grandmother has worked extensively on this, but has reached a dead end and I'd love to help her out. What a wonder it would be to help her find these missing family.

My ancestor is named Mark Hopkin and resided in Sheffield, England in the 1800's.
There seems to be no trace of his parents. My grandma explained that he had been arrested when he was 18 and that she believed (or had record of some sort - that part is fuzzy) that his parents had disowned him at this point. She speculated that he could have changed his name after the family drama and that could by why we are having difficulty tracking his parents and siblings (if any) down.

I am wondering how an experienced genealogist would proceed with this information. I know it is a lot of speculation. I have access to Ancestry, but that hasn't lead us anywhere.

Thank you so much.

Welcome to RC!

It would be an idea to give as much info. as you can with more specific dates/decades such as when/where in 1800s he lived in Sheffield & what yr (approx) he was born & where (if known)?

Any other info. you can add such as siblings etc. will help others to help you.

ancestry has two records for a Mark Hopkins in HMP Wakefield One in 1879 where he is age 21 (drunk) and the other in 1892 age 29 (drunk and disorderly). Whether these are the same man who has fudged his age making him either born 1863 or 1858 ....... Note the surname is Hopkins.

Good find crisane!

To follow on for dreahatch...

It's always good to have an open mind on name transcriptions whether written by someone taking down notes or info. which has been done by OCR (Optical Character Recognition) as many words (especially if faint) aren't picked up properly i.e. you could end up with Hopkin(s) with the down stroke of the 'P' not too visible which could turn up as 'HoOkins'...
Just an example of what to look for  ;D

Thank you so much for your speedy replies.

Here is what I know about Mark.
He was born in 1818 in Sheffield. He married Mary Longley, worked as a blade maker, had several children (8 or 9). He died in 1881 at the age of 63 in Sheffield.

I have kept my eyes peeled for what could be surname deviations, misspelled versions or in one case I have already come across, a mistakenly indexed variation which was input as "Hopkey" (It said "Hopkin" on the record).

Those records Crisane referenced WERE a good find! But Mark would have been too old to match them sadly.

I have no record of any siblings as of yet.

So from the birth reg of Selina daughter age 8 in the 1851 census Mary - wife of Mark Hopkin - has the maiden name Longley.
No marriage on FreeBMD but marriage reg only started in Sept 1/4 1837 so if before that it will ba a parish record we are looking for. I couldn't see anything on familysearch.org but there is a marriage on FreeReg for a Mary Longley in Silkstone in the West Riding of Yorkshire 1831 but it is to an Edward Lawton and 1831 seems a bit early if the child Mary age 3 on the 1841 census is the eldest child of the marriage.

Can you identify the son / daughter  of Mark HOPKIN  from whom you are descended.

Can you give birth, death and marriage details for this person.........locations, names, dates, relevant to BDM events for this ancestor........child of Mark HOPKIN.

Where are you seeing a possible name change?
