Ballincollig
« on: Tuesday 17 April 18 16:56 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Hope this works, trying to attach an extract from the 1901 census that indicates my Grandfather John O'Neill and 2 of his siblings were Residents of a House 38 in Ballincollig.

Does anyone know what House 38 refers to?  I was hoping this was an actual address but do not think it is?

Any help appreciated.
Thanks

My Burtons in Aughnacloy Rural, Co Tyrone are at House No. 16, Dernabane.  As Dernabane was a Townland and not an actual village, I believe in this case it is only the number on the form.

Clicking on House & Building Return (Form B1) shows the Burtons as No. 16.  Dernabane R.C. Church was No.7 on that form and that surely wouldn't be No. 7 in a street......

Likewise, Burtons in Mill Street, Aughnacloy are No. 3 on the forms but I don't know if they lived at 3 Mill Street. :-\

That's Irish for you, as they say ;)

The address is O'Neill, Ballincollig.
Houses in rural areas (including towns) didn't/don't usually have numbers, you can tell from the house and building return that they lived in the town of Ballincollig rather than the townland. (The town is in the townland in this case, many towns straddle two or more townlands which can help narrow down the part of town a family lived.
The postman was expected to know where each family lived, now each building has it's own postcode.
