Looking for a Somerset Watchmaker
« on: Tuesday 24 April 18 17:57 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone could help me try & trace my 3 x ggf who was a watchmaker in Bath, Somerset from at least 1815 (may have been slightly earlier) until he died in 1821.

His name was John James Stevens born approx 1790.

I have tried to find him in a few clock/watchmaker books with no success but I'm wondering if anyone has access to the following book:-

The Clockmakers of Bristol, 1650-1900: Together With a Supplementary List of the Clockmakers of Bath, 1650-1990 by A J Moore

If so would they be kind enough to see if he or any other Stevens/Stephens is listed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Keith

Hi Girl Guide - thanks for the suggestion but I have already been in touch with TWCC with no success. From what I can gather the book by A J Moore is the most comprehensive on Bath clockmakers.

Try contacting Brian Loomes at the link below. He is very knowledgeable about antique clocks, and clockmakers. He gave me a lot of assistance with one of my wife's ancestors.

Not only did he have information on my wife's ancestor, he even had some photos of one of his clocks, made in the 1600's.

Any information regarding my ancestor would be great - he is the major 'brickwall' in my FT   ::)

The British Library have this book listed in their catalogue.  I'm not sure if this means that they actually have the book or not.

Perhaps you would like to consider contacting them and asking about it:-
