Baptism in Cambridgeshire or Suffolk
« on: Saturday 28 April 18 17:46 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm enquiring about the following baptism:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NBZS-QZ9

I'm aware Soham is near the Suffolk border. But did the baptism occur in Suffolk or in Cambridgeshire? It gives a place of birth as 'SOHAM, CAMBRIDGE COUNTY' yet the baptism is in 'SUFFOLK COUNTY BTS, SUFFOLK, ENGLAND'.

What does 'BTS' mean? And was the baptism in Cambridgeshire or Suffolk?

I'd appreciate any help,

Adam

I would imagine BTS refers to the Bishops Transcript - copies of the Parish Registers which the Vicar was obliged to send to the Bishop of the Diocese. According to the Genuki site the Bishops Transcripts for Soham 1563-1641 and 1663-1845 are held at Suffolk Records Office which is probably how Suffolk came into it.

The Cambridge Family History Society has a transcrpit of James Scare's baptism, parents John, a Labourer, and Ann.

Thanks! That makes sense.
