Thank you everyone for the help you have given me. Now I will try to find out what happened to him and his family. The information on the census is spot on, I was told years ago that Robert's father had deserted family and that is why they ended up in Poorhouse.  Thank you all again. Alexanderina.

Hi,

There is a 16 year old Andrew Aitken - a glazier born in Glasgow , lodging with John Crombie and his family at 38 Bridge Street, Gorbals, Glasgow (Civil Parish - Tradeston).

This could be another of the Aitken children out on his own,

Young Ellen Aitken - aged 2 on 1841 Census , could be the 12 year old Helen Aitken recorded as a House Servant on the 1851 Census ?
This Helen Aitken is living at 57 High Street, Gorbals with Archibald P Allan and his family.

Looks like the family was split up prior to 1851
