On the 1851 census for James and Hannah Mead, they have a grandson, Edward Winch age 5 with them.  So there should be another sibling somewhere for Caroline.

Unfortunately, it looks as though both James Winch and his sister Jane died before 1841, so we don’t know where they came from.

Yes it is very unfortunate about the timing of it all  :'( at least the connection to the Mead family has been established though.

Good find LilyM  ;D

Edwards birth registration
WINCH, EDWARD       no mothers maiden surname on index
1844  June Quarter
HENDON RD  Volume 03  Page 214

This would name the mother

Can anyone see Eliza's p.o.b. on this census record:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2M2-F8SW

Eliza Winch married George Bricknell in 1857, as found by Lily M, and this marriage was witnessed by the same two people (the Meads) who witnessed Caroline's marriage in 1855.

Although this won't directly help with Caroline, this Eliza Winch is some sort of relative to her and her father, James.

Actually that might not be the George Bricknell and Eliza Winch. This couple is written on every census as Brignell. I'll search for the Bricknells.

I can find just these two censuses for Eliza.

1881 - Willesden

George Bricknell 47  gen.lab     Oxfordshire
Eliza Bricknell  wife  57     Mdx. Harefield
John Bricknell  son  7     Middx.

1891 - Ealing

George Bricknell  56  ge.lab     Oxfordshire
Eliza Bricknell  wife  67     Middx.
John Bricknell  son  17     Middx.

Harefield is also where James Mead was born.

(The son John being born when Eliza was 50 years old is a little bit suspect)

It’s also not conclusive that Eliza was born in Middlesex as in 1841 there’s an Elizabeth Winch  17  servant living in Hillingdon who gives her place of birth as Essex.

This is too confusing. I doubt that anything conclusive will ever be found  :'(

The James Mead (wheelwright) who witnessed Caroline and Eliza’s marriages, got married as a widower in January 1841 (same signature) in Southwark.  He married Harriet Winch.  So looks like Harriet was known as Hannah.

On the 1851 census, Hannah Mead was born 1805.

James Winch who died 1840 was bc1800

Jane Mead who died 1837 in Harlesden was bc 1802

I think this family look promising:

Baptisms at Harefield, Middlesex - parents James and Margaret Winch

Edward  1798
James   1800
Jane   1801
Harriet   1805

That's great! Thanks so much. Presumably if there is a James Winch marriage some point between coming of age and Caroline's birth in around 1831 that should give her mother - unless she was illegitimate.
