On FindMyPast but not on Ancestry
« on: Tuesday 08 May 18 12:58 BST (UK) »
I won't go into too much detail since I've posted exhaustively about John Williams and his father James Williams in the past. However.......

I've still been searching and on FindMyPast and found a possible candidate

Family member last name
Williams

Archive reference
HO107

Piece number
433

Book number
4

Folio number
28

Page number
20
Ross Road, St Martin, Hereford & Dore, Herefordshire, England

Record set
1841 England, Wales & Scotland Census

it's of interest because the DOB of John is correct and the original for his father James appears to read "Carpenter" for profession though that could just be wishful thinking on my part.

However, I've tried putting the same search parameters in Ancestry to check the transcription and can't find it at all. I can't work out how to search by census reference number.

What am I doing wrong?
Davis - Berkshire & London
Sutcliffe - Yorkshire & London
Harrington - Ireland and London
Fuller - Cambridgeshire and Essex
Waldron/Waldren - Devon & London
Frisby and Lee - Leicestershire
Hollingsworth - Essex
Williams - Ireland? and London
Ellis, Reed & Temple - London
Lane - ?
Surplice/Surplus - Cambridgeshire
Elwood - Cambridgeshire

You can search by reference number on ancestry by going to the specific census search, in this case that for 1841.

I’ve just done it and it works  :D

James senior and John are transcribed as William ( no ‘s’)

On Ancestry home page click on 1841 (UK Census Records)

Scroll down until you see 'Included data collections'

Click on 1841 England Census

Scroll down until you see piece/folio etc.

Input the details you have and hopefully the William household will appear.

JJ

Added apologies didn't see JenB's post  :) I've also managed to locate the family using the above.

I've just discovered that if I put some of the other family members into Ancestry's search parameters the family does show up.

Weird....

The issue you're hitting is that two entirely separate people looked at the Census and decided what to type as the transcription.  Two different people, with two differing versions of the original (quality of copies, microfiche, actual originals), maybe years apart and certainly people of different ages in different parts of the country.  90% of the time they'll both get it correct, the other 10% they will err (as we all would) or differ slightly.

When looking at transcriptions, you must be aware of their original source and who would've done the transcription, so you can make informed choices as to whether to search on alternative record sets or whether they all come from the same original source.  Or, simply check everything ... find some differences/omissions and maybe get lucky in seeing the originals and seeing for yourself.

All data sets are simply an opportunity to potentially find who you're looking for with a few keystrokes, instead of laboriously tracking down originals and seeing it for yourself.  The gaps, or errors, or omissions you're left with are then your invitation to "dig deeper/further" if required.

I was pointing out what the transcription was. What the page actually says is debatable. Son James seems to be Williams  :-\
