Well presumably they didn't have two sons named James at the same time unless the second James was nicknamed Jesse which would ally with my hypothesis.
Lipman family of Aldgate - ends with Lewis Lipman (d. 1871, Bethnal Green), son of John Lipman 'late of Glasgow' (1856)
McGregor family of Fodderty - ends with Alexander McGregor (b. 1765, Fodderty), son of Murdoch McGregor and Kate Stewart

Hi,

I have three sons of John & Elizabeth Thoro(w)good named James, all baptised at Stebbing, I have found a burial for the first James but not the second.

James Thorowgood baptised 16 Nov 1740 and buried 30 Dec 1740.
James Thorogood baptised 10 Apr 1748.
James Thorowgood baptised 4 Aug 1751.

My ancestor is their older brother John who was baptised at Stebbing 1 Jan 1737.

I have seen on a site that someone claims that the James Thorowgood baptised in 1751 married Ann Borham at Stebbing 8 Oct 1769, whether that's correct or not I wouldn't know.

Ah well that rules out that hypothesis. Thanks.

Just for the record.

The names in my post are as they were spelled in the Stebbing PRs.

I was visiting Essex in June 2007 and I had a recheck for the burial of the 1748 James Thorogood and was unsuccessful.

On the 22 Feb 2011 back for another Essex visit I rechecked Stebbing burials again and still did not find the burial of James baptised 1748, I have a note attached to my record "some of the writing in 1748 was in a different hand so perhaps the burial entry was omitted."

I keep hoping the burial will turn up one day, perhaps in a nearby parish.  :-\  :)

Hi MacGrigor,

Noting you have a Willis line as well as a Thoro(w)good line has me wondering if it's an Essex Willis line?

Sarah, granddaughter of the John & Elizabeth Thorogood I mentioned married into my Willis line, if this is the same story with you and you would like to discuss them perhaps start a new topic and I'll reply.

My Willis families for several generations were Shalford based but Sarah was baptised in Stebbing.

Regards.

Hello,

I happen to have 2 Willis lines, both in Shalford. These are:

Naomi Willis, christened 1800, Shalford - married Peter Thorogood in 1819 in Shalford
Sarah Willis, christened 1830, Shalford - married Jesse Thorogood in 1848 in Shalford

I don't know if these Willis members are connected to yours. Naomi's line goes back to George Willis, christened in 1748 in Shalford. Sarah's goes back to John Willis, christened in 1772 in Shalford.

Lipman family of Aldgate - ends with Lewis Lipman (d. 1871, Bethnal Green), son of John Lipman 'late of Glasgow' (1856)

I have in my "Spares Database" George Willis son of Henry and Elizabeth baptised 10 Sep 1748 at Shalford, you no doubt have that info.

Again from my Spares Database I have a Henry Willis who married Elizabeth Bird at Black Notley, both were noted as being of Shalford, are this couple yours?

My ancestors who were having children around the time of your George being baptised in 1748 were Edward Willis and his wife Sarah Joyce, their children, all baptised in Shalford:-

Edward 1725.
Sarah 1725.
John 1740, aged 10.
Thomas 1740, aged 8.
Joseph 1740, aged 5.
Elizabeth 1740, aged 2.

The parents of Sarah Joyce were Samuel Joyce and Hannah Rust, I would have expected Edward and Sarah to name children Samuel and Hannah so perhaps there are other children baptised in some other parish.

I have another Willis line which were based in Felsted and Great Saling.
